According to an account written many years later by her grandson Campbell Kirkpatrick:"The mother was born in Kentucky at Bryant's Station in the year 1783. Possibly also of Elijah who moved from Bourbon Co., KY to settle in Highland Co., OH.According to The History of McLean Co., IL, James Kirkpatrick was born in PA and subsequently moved to KY.He married, Bourbon Co., KY, to Ann Philips, daughter of John Philips. who probably came from Lancaster and/or Cumberland Co., PA to Bourbon Co., KY no later than 1788.James was likely the brother of Joseph, Adam, John, and Thomas Kirkpatrick, Jr. It was his two daughters-in-law who were born in South Carolina.His surviving children reported on the 1880 census that he was born in Kentucky, so he probably went there with his family while still a child.He appears to have been the son of Thomas Kirkpatrick, Sr. The exact date is perhaps too perfect, but he was probably born about that time. A family legend has come down that James Kirkpatrick, buried at Oaktown, was born on the Fourth of July, 1776 in South Carolina.
